So. First off, a confession. I don’t really watch sports. I don’t really watch lots of cable TV with lots of advertisements. I watch TV on hulu but of late I have been trying to cut that down. It has gotten generally (with some exceptions) boring and predictable as a person who likes to make art, maybe I should spend more time creating entertainment instead of consuming it (not like I am going to stop watching anything I haven’t made all together, but I really should stop watching The Office. it has gotten so very bad).
So maybe what I am about to write is just some old fart backward thinking crazy talk but I have been watching a little bit of the Super Bowl tonight and I am kind of freaked out by the intense sexualization women and the altogether pornification of American culture at the halftime show and during advertisements (because lets be honest, there are no women on the football field at the superbowl… yet).
I consider myself to be sex positive. I am not against porn. And women, they can wear whatever they want. I am generally pro skimpy costumes and lace and short skirts and even pole dancing if thats your thing, but how is this suddenly mass culture? Mass culture that is billed as family friendly? I love Beyonce. I love her powerful sexy body, I love her music, I love her dancing, I love her highly managed image (hehe) but there are millions of children watching the Super Bowl and they are forming their ideas about gender roles as I write this. And the juxtaposition of dudes playing football and Beyonce in leather and lace (and absence of images of women playing sports and men dancing in lingerie) says to those children “this is what boys do and this is what girls do.”
I honestly think that having a daughter really changes how I look at sex in the media, (although perhaps I would feel that same way if I had a son). There is no chance in hell I would let Jolene watch any of this until she is… much older. This is not to deny that children are sexual beings but Beyonce is performing adult sexuality. And that is not for children. Lets let children be children and stop compressing the ages down because at this point in this country your are born a tween. The infant department at Target has neon skinnies and shirts with open backs straight out of the teen department (oh wait thats another rant..). The hypocrisy that our society spoon feeds this shit to children and then turns around and denies them comprehensive sex ed and reproductive rights when they get older is infuriating. I don’t know. Sometimes I think I need to just live in the woods.
